As I’ve mentioned in previous posts my grandparents got 12 baby chicks this year. I decided to photoshop a picture of one of them into a little demon chick. Little did I know this was just a preview of what was left to come. I would go out every day and see the chickens. Feed them, play with them, help clean out their pins. Then I started to realize something was off. One of the chickens started to act different from the rest. She would always be away from the other chickens, would sit on the bottom perch by herself in the chicken coop (that usually means they are lower on the totem pole than the other chickens). As I noticing all of this I decided to start recording what the chickens would in a day to better understand them and more specially the demon chick. In the video it shows the regular day of demon chick and the other chickens. Demon chick mostly hangs out by herself and is only ever interested in being with the other chickens when there is food involved and sometimes even fights with the others for food.
This behavior continued to happen. The chickens formed little clicks and demon chick continued to be excluded until one day, one of the chickens died. I had went outside to look at it and it was perfectly fine but then a few hours later it just wasn’t. My family assumed it was just a freak accident. Little did we know, more was to come.
Weeks passed when one day we went out to the pasture to find all of the chickens had mysteriously been killed. But instead of it being all 11 chickens, it was just 10. Demon Chick had escaped. We called the police since we thought it might be our neighbors since they have trespassed and tried to steal from us before.
Months passed and other farms and flocks had the same things happened to them. The epidemic spread across the county, then the state, and soon it was happening all over the United States. Some strange virus had been started in the Demon Chick. It was regarded as worse than the avian flu and was called “mad chick” disease. It was discovered to be a strange form of rabies that made chickens isolate themselves and partake in strange behaviors which would gradually become worse over months until they would start to kill their fellow chickens. Many news outlets covered this strange illness, including a cover story done by Newsweek. It was crazy to think such a strange thing could start in my very own back yard.
For my following assignment I decided on “Dog it Out” which is worth 3 stars. To start off I went and looked through all of the pictures of my animals on my phone that I thought I could do something funny with. It was when I came across a picture of myself holding one my grandparents chickens that I knew what to do. My grandparents bought a dozen baby chicks in April and this a picture of one of them when they were still fluffy. Since then they have become bad little animals that fiend for lettuce and like to jump on each other and out of their boxes. That’s why I thought it would be perfect to take a cute picture of a baby chick and add devil horns and a tail to it to show the little monsters they would become. The picture also has a red tint from the heat lamp so it gave more of an evil vibe to what I was trying to accomplish. Here is the original picture:
Beginning my assignment I searched “devil horns transparent” on Google and found both horns and a tail to add to my image. After downloading these images I opened up Microsoft PowerPoint and inserted all 3 images by clicking “insert” -> “photo” -> “picture from file”.
Now that I have all my pictures added I can move the pictures around how I like. I also am going to flip the tail so that it is positioned on the chicken better. To do this I select “format picture” then click the arrow going in a circle on the left and press “flip horizontal”. I also adjusted the images sizes by moving the dots on the edges of the squares.
Here is my completed demon chick. I think it turned out pretty good and all of the colors blend together nicely as if it is in its natural environment.
My next design assignment is “What Are You Missing Nearby” which is worth 3 stars. For this assignment I have to decide on 4 locations close by to include in my collage. For this I plan to do both buildings and nature. The first location I decided on was Great Falls Park located off of the Potomac River. I chose this location because my mother has always wanted to take me, my siblings, and our dog there for a walk but I have yet to go so I thought this would give me a good opportunity to look into it. My next location is the Manassas National Battlefield Park which was the site for battles during the Civil War. This location gives a great chance for everyone to learn about our state’s history. Close by is Old Town Manassas which features an outdoor iceskating rink, a variety of restaurants, and events year round. My final location is Ferry Farm which was George Washington’s boyhood home. Here you can walk along the river, see what life was like in the 1700s, and go on informational tours.
For this collage I will be using the same program that I used in a previous blog post on different facial expressions. To start off the collage I open up the program Photo Collage Maker- CollageFactory Free available on the iTunes App Store. I then choose “Free Style 4-1” from the top right of the page and press “ok”.
Next click the box with a green plus sign at the bottom left of the page and select the pictures you want to use. After this you can click the images and drag them into the desired boxes. I also left most of the options on the left the same except for changing the width to 0.
To add the text I pressed button with a T on it at the top right of the page. Then press add text which places a box on the image and allows you to adjust the font size, color, and style.
Here is my final collage. It features all 4 of the locations discussed earlier with their respective names overtop the image. This would be a good starting point of interesting places to visit for those living in Northern Virginia.
On my next design assignment I decided on “We’ve Got You Covered” which is worth 4 stars. When I was in middle school I was obsessed with magazines like Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan, and everything else in the grocery store check out line. Since then my love for glossy covers has died down to just the occasional read while in the airport but I thought this would give me the opportunity to mix all my favorite things into one magazine. Many publishers focus on one niche and that is all they discuss. For example Seventeen talks about young high school girl issues. I decided this assignment would allow me to mix in my love for fashion with my interests in cars, love life, and video games. The name I decided on for my magazine is “M” in the style of Oprah’s “O” magazine.
For this assignment I am once again using PowerPoint. While it may be an unconventional photo editor I think it does just what I need it to and it is readily available to me. The first step was to decide on a picture I wanted to use as the cover art. Many magazines use celebrities as their cover stars so I decided on a picture of myself since it is my magazine (just like Oprah). To add my picture into PowerPoint I clicked “insert” -> “photo” -> “picture from file” and selected the picture I wanted. I have done this same type of work before which can be seen in a previous assignment about funny animal edits.
Now that I have my picture imported I must add the text. To do this I click “insert” -> “text box” then click on where I want the words throughout the picture. I am doing multiple boxes in different fonts, sizes, and colors. All of these can be found in the “format” section after you have placed your text box.
Overall I think my magazine cover turned out pretty good. I tried to pick concepts that represented me such as Game of Thrones, makeup, gaming, and a homage to my flower crown through the Snapchat article.
For my first design assignment I choose myself fI decided on “Create a T-Shirt” which is worth 2 and a half stars. When I first looked at this page on the Design Assignment Bank I saw the example t-shirt featured an animated character so this inspired me to use an animated character that I greatly enjoy. League of Legends has been one of my favorite games since I started playing it in 2012 and one of my favorite characters to play as is Teemo. He is one of the most iconic characters in the game so it was only fitting he got his own t-shirt. I also had to think about what I wanted to add to the t-shirt other than his picture. I then had a lightbulb go off in my head and decided a jersey would be perfect considering it is for a video game character. I decided to put Teemo’s picture on the front so it would be visible then put “CAPTAIN TEEMO” at the top on the back of the shirt and then since Teemo was one of the original 20 characters released in the alpha of the game back in 2009 I decided to put 20 has his number. I also decided to leave the shirt white since Teemo is pretty colorful and I didn’t want to make the shirt too cluttered.
My first step in my creative process is to find a t-shirt template to add my design too. For this I searched “t shirt template” on Google Images and decided on the first picture since it offered both a front and back.
Next I clicked on the image then right clicked and saved the image to my computer. I also followed these same 2 steps for the Teemo picture I will be using.
I then opened up Microsoft PowerPoint clicked “insert” at the top left hand side of my computer then scrolled down to “photo” then selected “picture from file” and chose the 2 pictures.
Now that my images are added into PowerPoint I can change the size of the Teemo image and position on the shirt to how I like it by moving the dots on the edges of the square to shrink then just clicking the center of the image to move it.
Now that I am happy with the front of the shirt I must work on the back. For this I am going to make it similar to a jersey style. To add text I clicked “Insert” then “text box” then clicked on where I wanted the text to be. At the top of the shirt I wrote “Captain Teemo” in bold, size 20, calibri font and and then “20” in size 120, calibri font. I clicked on the text boxes and moved them around until I was happy with the positioning.
So here is my final t-shirt design featuring Teemo from League of Legends. This would be good for anyone who is a fan of League of Legends and more specifically likes to play this character a lot.
For my second gif I decided on “Animals Doing Funny Things” which is worth 1 and a half stars. Most of my life I have been surrounded my animals. Both of my parents grew up in the country and my grandparents all lived on farms. While I live in Woodbridge, Virginia which is definitely not the country I still exposed to the outdoors and animals. My aunt has a Rhodesian ridgeback, my mom has a pit bull mix, my grandparents have a yorkie and bloodhound plus a dozen chickens, while my boyfriend’s family have 2 german shepherds, 2 dachshunds, 2 cats, and a lizard. In the past I have also had fish, but they were not as memorable. At first I tried to find a video of one of the many animals I come in to contact with on a daily basis but sadly could not locate a video of them doing anything humorous. My next mission was to explore the internet and find some funny animal video. For this I went to the one true video king, YouTube. A few months ago I had remembered seeing a video of golden retriever puppies swimming for the first time so I looked up that and found the video I wanted.
To start off my gif I have to choose a website to make my gif. I am very familiar with giphy.com and have used it multiple times (such as in my last blog post on making a gif) in the past so that is the generator I will be using today. Giphy doesn’t require you to have an account so I simply clicked “Create” at the top right and started making my gif.
The next step is to retrieve the url of the video you want to create and insert it into the white box at the top of the page and it will automatically load the video below.
After this I scroll down the page and decide when I want the gif to start and how long I want the gif to be. For this I decided to start at 16 seconds which shows the puppy jumping into the water and swimming. I made the gif 3 seconds long because it showed a quick, funny scene and the next part of the video is a different puppy. I recommend watching the gif a few times and messing with the lengths to achieve desired results.
If you continue to scroll down the page if gives you options to add captions and tags to your gif but I did not feel the need to do that. All that is left is to click “Create Gif” at the bottom of the page.
It will load and take you to another page. This page gives you the option to share your completed gif!
My second gif now shows the story of a golden retriever swimming for the first time and specifically one puppy jumping into the water.
For my first design assignment I decided to tackle “Are we there yet?” which is worth 3 stars. I decided on this picture of my yorkie named Jake from Halloween 2015 in a devil costume.
My Nana was trying to get him to pose with our bloodhound Emmie who is seen walking away in the background. He was really unhappy about having to take a picture so this gave me the perfect opportunity to edit him into a funny picture setting. While thinking about what the background would be I decided I want there to be a real devil in the picture since he is just in a costume. This way I could show him being afraid of the real devil. Recently, I have been watching a lot of Futurama so I decided on inserting him into a picture of Beelzebot, better known as the Robot Devil. The specific photo I decided on is this one of the Robot Devil looking mischievous while standing in a doorway. I picked this photo because I wanted one of him standing up so it would be Jake quivering looking up at him scared. I mean, the Robot Devil is pretty evil and looks like he is up to no good in this picture.
To start off I needed to decide what editing software I wanted to use. For this I actually decided on PowerPoint since it is easily available and I know it can do what I need it to do. My first step of editing is to start off with a blank template.
Next I clicked “Insert” -> “Photo” -> “Picture from File” then selected the pictures I wanted to use.
From there I have both of my pictures in PowerPoint and can start editing.
I begin by clicking on the picture of Jake in his devil costume. I then click “Remove Background” so that I can make the picture just of him. I adjust the lines of box so it is just around Jake and then click any parts that are highlighted in purple that I want to be shown. Once I’m happy with what is being shown I just click “Remove Background” again and it saves my changes.
I can then drag the box to place Jake where I want him to be. I decided to put him to the bottom right of Robot Devil so that it shows him looking up towards him scared.
So here is my final image. Overall I’m pretty happy with it and I think that it accomplishes the humor and fear that I originally set out to create. It ends up changing the concept from “scared of a picture” to “scared of Robot Devil” and changes the story of the picture.
