As I’ve mentioned in previous posts my grandparents got 12 baby chicks this year. I decided to photoshop a picture of one of them into a little demon chick. Little did I know this was just a preview of what was left to come. I would go out every day and see the chickens. Feed them, play with them, help clean out their pins. Then I started to realize something was off. One of the chickens started to act different from the rest. She would always be away from the other chickens, would sit on the bottom perch by herself in the chicken coop (that usually means they are lower on the totem pole than the other chickens). As I noticing all of this I decided to start recording what the chickens would in a day to better understand them and more specially the demon chick. In the video it shows the regular day of demon chick and the other chickens. Demon chick mostly hangs out by herself and is only ever interested in being with the other chickens when there is food involved and sometimes even fights with the others for food.
This behavior continued to happen. The chickens formed little clicks and demon chick continued to be excluded until one day, one of the chickens died. I had went outside to look at it and it was perfectly fine but then a few hours later it just wasn’t. My family assumed it was just a freak accident. Little did we know, more was to come.
Weeks passed when one day we went out to the pasture to find all of the chickens had mysteriously been killed. But instead of it being all 11 chickens, it was just 10. Demon Chick had escaped. We called the police since we thought it might be our neighbors since they have trespassed and tried to steal from us before.
Months passed and other farms and flocks had the same things happened to them. The epidemic spread across the county, then the state, and soon it was happening all over the United States. Some strange virus had been started in the Demon Chick. It was regarded as worse than the avian flu and was called “mad chick” disease. It was discovered to be a strange form of rabies that made chickens isolate themselves and partake in strange behaviors which would gradually become worse over months until they would start to kill their fellow chickens. Many news outlets covered this strange illness, including a cover story done by Newsweek. It was crazy to think such a strange thing could start in my very own back yard.
This week was a little rougher than the rest. This past weekend I discovered some lumps on my neck and thought they would go away and they didn’t. I ended up having to go to the doctors and was told they weren’t exactly sure what I had but thought it might be a bacterial infection so I was given antibiotics. I’ve been taking the antibiotics for days but I have been feeling progressively worse. I had to take multiple days off of work this past week because my head, ears, neck, and whole body hurt so bad. I ended up sleeping most of the days since I felt so bad so I have been left to do all of my work in a shorter amount of time while I have 5 lumps on my neck. Fun!
Regarding my actual work I had the most fun creating Daily Create #1617 about the dark side of the moon because I thought it just ended up being pretty funny. I also really enjoyed doing the 30 second movie challenge which I had my boyfriend help me pick the most important parts. The only problems I really had were obviously the time constraint but it also ended up taking me much longer to do the assignment than I thought it would but overall I think it turned out really well. For the reflections I did I thought they were okay. I wasn’t exactly sure what I should be saying about the videos I watched for “Reading Movies” but I hope they turned out alright.
Here is some of the feedback I left on others pages this week:
To start off this summary I didn’t receive many comments. The only comment I have received thus far was a comment on my first gif tutorial and it didn’t have much criticism to add just “oh I liked this” which was nice. This may be some of my own fault since I tend to wait to do my work until the weekend since I work a full time job during the week so I’m too tired then. Somethings I learned from others blogs was different creative ideas. Sometimes when I’m confused on how to do something or I need some inspiration I look at other people’s blogs and see how they did an assignment or how their blog is set up. For this weeks assignments I think I did a pretty good job. I felt the daily creates were a little harder this week so I wasn’t as confident about my creativity on those since they were concepts I didn’t full understand. My favorite assignments of the week were daily create #1610 and audio assignment #70. For these I made a funny comic on Canada and an important story line about not texting and driving. I wasn’t very fond of the videos on storytelling and found it interesting how these are suppose to be experts but they themselves bored me. I don’t know, maybe radio isn’t for me. Overall this week I learned how to better manipulate sound which is a good tool to have in college since many times I have had to create video projects. Prior to this week I had never even used the voice memos app on my iPhone or uploaded something to SoundCloud so those were some new experiences. I also realized how much I enjoy having music apps such as Pandora or just my iTunes library since I’m not a huge fan of the long stories on the radio or podcasts. Books and movies are more my style for entertainment.
So I think I am starting to get a better hang of things this week than I did last week. I hadn’t previously realized that I needed to link back to the assignments so I made an effort to link back to everything I used and things I thought related. I also tried to extend my story and background sections to give the reader more of an idea about what I was creating. The main struggle I had this week were just time managing when to do work since I also am working a full time job and taking another online class. Due to this I hope that my quality of work is on par with what it needs to be. Another struggle was worrying that I didn’t make something look professional enough. For example for my 3rd design assignment (We’ve Got You Covered) I kept comparing my work to professional magazine covers and worrying that it wasn’t good enough even thought I know they have a lot more to work with than I do. My favorite assignment this week was my 5th design assignment (“Dog it Out”) where I put devil horns and a tail on my grandparents chick. I think that image actually turned out pretty good and I sent it to my grandparents and they laughed. I hope to continue to better my skills with editing and creating which I think this week helped me to do.
For DS106 I had to do some things I hadn’t done before. Prior to this class I already had a YouTube and other social media but I went and had to create things like a Flickr and SoundCloud so that my creations have a platform. Creating these accounts were pretty easy overall and were the quickest parts of my work this week. I also had to edit my domain. I had already created the basic outline of my website for Digital Studies 101 last semester but it needed a little tweaking. I had already made an ‘About Me’, ‘Portfolio’, and ‘Contact Me’ section of my website. For DS106 I made the decision to put my whole blog into one tab since I still use this website for other uses. I went and created all of the tags and categories so my work will be seen. The main challenges I had this week were simple problems I was just having difficulties answering. The first one was logging into my website. I had removed the login button due to atheistic reasons but could not remember where I login to edit my work. I eventually found it and have since added the login button back to my website since that makes my life easier. I also have still not been able to link my blog to the DS106 page so others can see my blog but I am working on trying to contact someone to fix it.
Overall I think this has been a productive first week overall and I have done a lot of work to better my digital skills. I believe I completed all of the assignments to the best of my abilities. I had the most fun time doing the scavenger hunt and it forced me to think outside the box. I’m not a artsy person so creating things that I can be proud of is something new to me that I’m still working.
