As I’ve mentioned in previous posts my grandparents got 12 baby chicks this year. I decided to photoshop a picture of one of them into a little demon chick. Little did I know this was just a preview of what was left to come. I would go out every day and see the chickens. Feed them, play with them, help clean out their pins. Then I started to realize something was off. One of the chickens started to act different from the rest. She would always be away from the other chickens, would sit on the bottom perch by herself in the chicken coop (that usually means they are lower on the totem pole than the other chickens). As I noticing all of this I decided to start recording what the chickens would in a day to better understand them and more specially the demon chick. In the video it shows the regular day of demon chick and the other chickens. Demon chick mostly hangs out by herself and is only ever interested in being with the other chickens when there is food involved and sometimes even fights with the others for food.
This behavior continued to happen. The chickens formed little clicks and demon chick continued to be excluded until one day, one of the chickens died. I had went outside to look at it and it was perfectly fine but then a few hours later it just wasn’t. My family assumed it was just a freak accident. Little did we know, more was to come.
Weeks passed when one day we went out to the pasture to find all of the chickens had mysteriously been killed. But instead of it being all 11 chickens, it was just 10. Demon Chick had escaped. We called the police since we thought it might be our neighbors since they have trespassed and tried to steal from us before.
The police showed up and put up the crime scene tape and started to investigate. They talked with my family, our neighbors, and When they were done they found that it was not our neighbors, and overall they didn’t think it was a human at all. They thought it was another chicken had done the acts so it left only one option: it had to be demon chick.
Months passed and other farms and flocks had the same things happened to them. The epidemic spread across the county, then the state, and soon it was happening all over the United States. Some strange virus had been started in the Demon Chick. It was regarded as worse than the avian flu and was called “mad chick” disease. It was discovered to be a strange form of rabies that made chickens isolate themselves and partake in strange behaviors which would gradually become worse over months until they would start to kill their fellow chickens. Many news outlets covered this strange illness, including a cover story done by Newsweek. It was crazy to think such a strange thing could start in my very own back yard.
